the Cottage:
Farmview Cottage is located in the Cartoogechaye section of Macon
County approximately five miles west of town. The name, Cartoogechaye,
is thought to be derived from the Cherokee, although it's meaning has
been disputed. Some believe it to mean the word for bread and others
have thought it to mean "the village beyond". The Cherokee settled
along the Cartoogechaye Creek and the many fertile bottom lands that
are found in this area. There is still evidence even today of their
many settlements.
This rich fertile valley is still home to a number of small farms that
have been operating for generations. While most of the active farms
have gone there is a increasing interest in preserving these farm lands
and making them productive again by growing the agricultural products
that appeal to the local market, such as cut flowers, herbs, spices,
berries and sheep and cattle.
The cottage while rather new is located on the southern edge of the old
historic Slagle farm. The farm, which is still in operation has been in
the same family since since the 1870's. The view of the front porch
faces towards the heart of the farm and the original home, still
standing, which was built in the 1860's.
The original owner of the cottage, a retiree from Alabama, loved the
mountains and worked hard to to landscape the grounds for her pleasure
and those that visited. The current owners, the Tinsley's, have worked
to preserve the charm and warmth of hospitality to this lovely setting.
We hope you will come and visit and return often.
